We picked up the trailer on Wednesday and drove as a couple for the first time (truck and trailer)! Let's just say this is the part I'm most nervous about and I'm not even driving.
Hooking up took some practice, but we finally got it with some adjustments to our hitch. Here we go, pulling out of the lot (turning wide!). As we get on the freeway, everyone passing us is staring. As we go under overpasses, I duck my head. My palms and feet are sweating, heart is pumping; all this while sitting in the passengers seat! Thank goodness for a tough truck, because it hauls like there's nothing behind us. As we get off the freeway (turning wide!), Jason notices that the back door on the trailer is flying open! How long has it been like that?! I run back and slam it shut and bar it with the handle. It's time to get the boys from school and we're hooked up to the trailer still, so we go to the school. It's amazing how fast people move when you are about to tear off their back ends with your trailer because they are parked illegally. They moved. It was a tight squeeze, but the kids were thrilled to be picked up with the trailer in front of all their friends.
We get home where the trailer will have to sit for 2 days until our storage space is available. Dropping the trailer from the truck was not a problem. We tried to auto level the trailer and the entire front end goes all the way to the ground and won't come back up. Uh, what's up with that? We carefully read the instructions again and push more buttons, nothing is moving. We've got a problem. Looking through the tons of paperwork for all the gizmos and gadgets the trailer has, I cannot find the one information booklet I need, the one for the auto leveling system. We called the service department at the RV place to get some help, but nobody knows why it won't go down. Talked with the service man who helped us earlier in the day and he says, "oh, yeah I had to hit the motor". WHAT!!!!!
So here we are on day 3 of our trailer sitting nose down in our street with HOA members staring us down. A guy is coming today to get it raised so we can hook it back up to the truck and take it back to the RV place.
At least it happened while we didn't necessarily need it and have time to get the repairs made. But now we need to pull it on the freeway again, with me sitting in the passenger seat and being the spotter.:) I know I'll get more comfortable each time we take it out. Jason is already talking about taking it to an empty parking lot so I can try driving with the trailer. Watch out!
Wow! Well, thank goodness it happened while still in the same area code and you could get it fixed! I does look HUGE hooked up together, but very cool as well. I'm going to choose to not think too much about the driving of this HUGE "home" but I have all the faith and confidence that you'll be fine when it's time to go. The big parking lot is a good idea...for both of you. Jason you're good at driving a trailer, but this is a TRAILER! So just more fun with the Carlsbad Grosdidiers. And my other is heading back to DC next week...my children are on the GO!. I'm glad you're all seeing the country..or going to. Love you all, Suzi
ReplyDeleteIt looks soooo HUGE!! Can't wait to "visit" in person. Glad that Jason has a capable/nervous spotter and that even though she has clammy/sweaty hands and sweaty feet - know that she and he will do well working together! [You've been doing this working together "thing" for the past 15 years-hard to imagine that length of time!] Just wait until he/she needs to do a back up of the whole rig! LOL ;)
ReplyDeleteLove BOTH of your LOTS [kids, too!] Hope/pray all of you will be able to adjust to be in the smaller space 24/7.
Love, Mom and Dad [Nonnie & Poppy]
